Michigan Raises its RPS to 15% by 2021

December 2016

There is good news from the Michigan Legislature that squeaked in right before the end of the 2016. The legislation extends and improves both the Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS) and the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).

The EERS bill, SB 438, officially endorses and extends the state’s 1% annual energy savings requirement for utilities through 2021. It also removes the existing cap on energy efficiency program spending, adds tiered incentives to encourage utilities to exceed 1.5% annual savings, and increases the previous RPS requirement for renewable electricity from 10% to 15%.

This gives MWEC RRC partners more confidence and reinforces the benefits of clean energy as we work on the local level for permitting of wind projects. There still is a great amount of local opposition and misinformation about wind energy development with people organizing at the county and local levels to stop it or slow down the development.
