A Duluth, Minnesota-based energy firm announced Wednesday an $80 million wind turbine project that would refurbish turbines at its two Storm Lake, Iowa wind farms and one in Minnesota. 

Allete Clean Energy said the project would replace select blades, gearboxes, and generators at the Storm Lake 1 and 2 wind sites in Buena Vista and Cherokee counties. The project would also repair turbines at the company's wind site in Lake Benton, Minnesota.


Imagine going on a 1,200 mile road trip... On your bike.  That's exactly what a UW professor will be doing to highlight wind energy.

James Tinjum leaves Saturday, July 15 for Bike the Wind, a biking tour of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota that will take him past 17 wind energy sites.  Tinjum plans to bike about 75 miles a day, and the journey will take him three weeks.

Iowa has a goal – and a plan to achieve it – to be the first state in the nation to meet 40% of our electricity needs from wind power by 2020. And we are well on our way.


Electric cooperatives that have taken the plunge into solar energy are the stars of a new website aimed at persuading more co-ops to add solar energy to their mix.

RuralSolarStories.org, produced by the Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC),  features the tales of three rural electric cooperatives across the Midwest that have responded to customer interest by investing in solar generation. More stories are on the way.
